Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.3.LI.2 - Discuss the classification of human diseases.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define communicable and non-communicable diseases and state at least two differences between them.
  2. Classify human diseases into at least three major categories (communicable, non-communicable, and inherited/genetic) with appropriate examples.
  3. Explain one classification of disease in detail, giving two valid examples of diseases within that classification.
  4. Describe how each classification of disease may affect sports performance and physical activity.
  5. Work collaboratively in mixed-gender and mixed-ability groups to research, organise and present information on a given disease classification using digital tools.

Group-based learning: In mixed-gender and mixed-ability groups, learners research the classification of diseases. Ensure a friendly atmosphere for discussion. Each group of learners is provided with a theme for the classification.
- Project-based learning: Assist learners to write a brief report on the implications of each classification of disease on sports performance.

Assessment (2.1.3.AS.2): Level 2: Describe two ways a communicable disease differs from a non-communicable disease. Level 3: Explain one classification of human diseases and give two examples of such diseases.
