Learning Objectives
Indicator: B9.3.1.2.2 - Use defining and non-defining relative clauses appropriately in speech and writing.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define a relative clause and identify the relative pronouns (who, whom, whose, which, that) used to introduce them.
- Distinguish between defining and non-defining relative clauses by their function and punctuation in given sentences.
- Construct original sentences using defining relative clauses to give essential information about people, places and things.
- Construct original sentences using non-defining relative clauses, correctly placing commas, to add extra information about people, places and things.
- Choose correctly between “which” and “who” and apply the comma rule when combining two independent clauses into a sentence containing a relative clause.
