Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.3.1.2.1 - Identify and use subject and predicate in text

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Split simple and compound sentences into their subject and predicate parts with at least 80% accuracy.
  2. Identify the single noun or noun phrase that acts as the subject of a sentence.
  3. Identify the predicate as the part that tells what the subject does or is, including the verb and everything after it.
  4. Complete incomplete predicates by adding a verb and other necessary words to make a full sentence.
  5. Compose three original sentences of their own, each containing a clear subject and predicate, and underline each part correctly.

This lesson builds directly on the noun work (B7.3.1.1.1), pronoun use (B7.3.1.1.2) and verb forms (B7.3.1.1.4) learners mastered in earlier weeks of Term 2. The subject of a sentence is almost always a noun or pronoun, and the predicate always centres on a verb, so learners will reuse familiar material in a new way.
