SHS3 Government · Semester 2, Week 12
Ghana in the Community of Nations
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.3.1.LI.2 - Analyse Ghana’s foreign policy towards Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Africa Union (AU), European Union (EU) and United Nations Organisation (UNO)
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Explain Ghana’s core foreign policy objectives towards ECOWAS, the AU, the EU, and the UNO, citing at least one concrete policy action for each organisation.
- Analyse how Ghana’s membership in ECOWAS and the AU reflects the principles of unity, cooperation, and mutual respect among African states.
- Examine the extent to which Ghana’s engagement with the EU and the UNO promotes the interests of minority groups within Ghana, including women, the youth, and persons with special needs.
- Evaluate Ghana’s foreign policy towards these four organisations using strategic reasoning, weighing successes against challenges.
- Demonstrate patriotism and respect for diverse nationalities, cultures, and races through informed discussion of Ghana’s role in the global community.
This lesson builds directly on the Week 11 lesson on Ghana’s policy of good neighbourliness (Indicator 3.3.1.LI.1). Whereas that lesson focused on bilateral relations with immediate neighbours, this lesson widens the lens to multilateral relations. The lesson stops short of the detailed assessment of Ghana’s overall foreign policy achievements, which is scheduled for later in the semester.
