Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.1.LI.1 - Identify and explain state and non-state actors in the international system

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Define “state actor” and “non-state actor” in their own words, giving at least one distinguishing feature of each.
  • Identify at least four examples of state actors and four examples of non-state actors in the international system.
  • Explain how at least two non-state actors (such as the UN, ECOWAS, Amnesty International, or multinational companies) influence international affairs.
  • Categorise a given list of organisations and countries correctly as either state actors or non-state actors.
  • Justify why smaller or poorer states may have less influence in the international system compared to powerful states and large non-state actors.
