SHS2 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 2, Week 17
Garment Design Technology
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.3.LI.2 - Take accurate body measurements to prepare a bodice block.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Explain the importance of accurate body measurement in garment construction, giving at least three reasons why inaccurate measurements lead to poor garment fit.
- Identify and name the specific parts of the body measured for a bodice block (bust, waist, hip, back width, shoulder length, etc.) for male and female clients.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for taking body measurements, including client positioning, tape placement, and recording methods, following the principles discussed in class.
- Record their partner’s body measurements accurately on a standard measurement chart, correctly entering all values in the appropriate columns.
- Use the measurements taken to calculate the basic dimensions needed to begin preparing a bodice block (e.g., adding ease allowances where required).

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Collaborative Learning, research, and experiential learning: 1. Let learners in groups explain body measurement and its importance with the use of relevant resources. 2. Tabulate the importance of body measurement during the group discussion and present findings in a whole class discussion Research and group work: 1. Help learners in their groups to come out with the principles underpinning the process of body measurement using internet surf, videos, photographs, drawings, etc. 2. Generate a manual chart of some principles underlying the process of body measurement. Present report in a whole class discussion Collaborative Learning, research: 1. In groups let learners identify the parts of the body that need to be measured with the use of relevant resources. 2. Make a digital or manual chart of the parts to be measured when the client is a man, woman, or child. 3. Present findings in a whole class discussion Project-based learning and Group work: 1. Pair learners and ask them to take their body measurements taking into consideration the principles and concepts underpinning body measurement using the appropriate tools and materials. 2. Learners use their measurements to prepare bodice block, skirt block and sleeve block Assessment (2.3.3.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
