SHS3 General Science · Semester 2, Week 3
Forces Acting on Substances and Mechanisms
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.3.2.LI.1 - Identify different types of forces and their daily applications.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Classify forces into contact and non-contact forces using everyday examples.
- Describe frictional force, fluid friction and the factors that influence them.
- Demonstrate, through practical activity, how friction can be increased or reduced.
- Apply knowledge of forces to explain the operation of at least two simple machines or everyday tools.
- Present and defend findings on the effects and reduction of friction using appropriate scientific language.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Collaborative Learning: - Use concept maps to explain different types of forces. - Using 3E learning model, let learners engage, explore and explain the applications of forces. NB: Emphasise frictional forces, factors influencing fluid friction and increase or decrease of friction. - Engage learners to discuss frictional force its effects and how to reduce it. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Charts, pictures, videos, simulations and realia of simple machines. - Simulations/videos, and pictures. Assessment (3.3.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
