- Read a two-paragraph text aloud at a steady pace, without stopping after every word, while following along with a finger or marker.
- Read the same text with at least 90% accuracy, correctly pronouncing familiar and newly introduced words.
- Vary their voice to show feeling in the text, such as excitement, sadness or surprise, when reading dialogue and descriptive sentences.
- Read a short passage aloud to a partner, self-correcting mistakes immediately and continuing without long pauses.
