Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: K2.2.3.1.4 - Identify the initial sounds, clap and count the number of syllables in different words related to festivals and celebrations

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Say the initial sound (beginning letter sound) of at least five words related to festivals and celebrations, such as f for festival and c for Christmas.
  2. Clap the syllables in festival and celebration words correctly, clapping once for each syllable they hear.
  3. Count and state the number of syllables in given celebration words, for example saying “Homowo has 3 syllables” after clapping Ho-mo-wo.
  4. Sort simple festival words into groups by their first letter sound (for example, words beginning with m and words beginning with f).
  5. Respond with confidence when asked to clap and count syllables in words from the Term 1 Week 10 reading texts about Easter and Eid-al-Fitr, showing that they connect this lesson to earlier learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

List the names of various celebrations and festivals, guide learners to identify the number of syllables in the word by clapping. Have the learners identify and write the beginning letter sounds and also clap the syllables again and again. E.g. Christmas begins with the letter sound /c/ and it can be clapped into 2 syllables etc.
