SHS2 Art And Design Studio · Semester 2, Week 4

Fabrication and Construction

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.2 - Review different types of subtractive processes and techniques for performing particular studio tasks and creation of artworks.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Name at least five subtractive processes used in 3-D art-making and match each to an appropriate local material and tool.
  2. Explain the difference between carving, cutting, drilling, sanding, and abrasion as subtractive techniques, giving one studio task suited to each.
  3. Demonstrate two different subtractive techniques on a found or provided material (e.g., soap, soft wood, or clay block) while observing basic safety rules.
  4. Review and compare subtractive processes in small groups, identifying which technique is best suited to a given studio task and justifying their choice.
  5. Reflect on the outcomes of their own subtractive experiments, noting what worked, what did not, and what they would do differently.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Talk for Learning: In a class discussion, analyse different types of subtractive processes, tools, materials and techniques.
Experimental Learning: Explore subtractive processes with found materials.
Project-Based Learning; Group Work/ Collaborative Learning: In groups, explore to identify suitable materials from the environment and use them to create an artwork with the subtractive processes of art-making.

Assessment (2.2.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
