Fabrication and Construction
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.2.2.LI.2 - Design and create 2-D art or design work using conventional and non-conventional materials, tools, and relevant processes to respond to societal problems.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- identify at least five conventional and five non-conventional materials and tools in their immediate environment suitable for creating 2-D art and design works, with reference to the inventory started in Week 2.
- explain how specific materials and tools can serve multiple applications (for example, texture surfaces for both pattern making and printing) in the creation of 2-D works.
- select and justify an appropriate material-tool combination to address a chosen societal problem in their community.
- design and produce a 2-D artwork responding to a societal problem, applying additive processes and techniques such as layering, collage, or printmaking.
- present and explain their finished work, describing the steps involved, the tools and materials used, and how their work responds to the societal problem identified.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Group Work/Collaborative Learning/Problem-Based Learning: In mixed groups make an inventory, using pictorial and video documentation, of materials and tools in the immediate environment that can be used to create 2-D art and design works. Group Work/Collaborative Learning: In groups review additive processes and techniques used in performing selected studio tasks in 2-D art and design works. Talk for Learning: Discuss how tools and materials can be used for multiple applications to create 2-D art and design works. Examples: paints for surface decoration and making images, texture surfaces for printing and pattern making, generating woodblocks for printing and printmaking, etc. Assessment (1.2.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Materials: the immediate environment; textbook; web references; videos; flip charts; posters; flyers, buntings; TLMs on proposal writing about 2D art-making such as collage, painting, textile design, graphic design, printing and printmaking, photography; TLMs on for 3D art-making processes and techniques in collage, sculpture, ceramics and pottery, weaving and basketry, macrame, assemblage and construction
