Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B9.2.1.1.3 - Demonstrate skills in using some culturally specific gestures in a limited range of special occasions.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least five culturally specific gestures used at marriage and naming ceremonies in Ghana, and state what each gesture communicates.
- Use the provided wedding vocabulary (ما شاء الله، حفلة زواج أخي اليوم، هو عريس، العروس سعيدة، العقد يكون في جامع كوماسي) to describe a wedding ceremony they have witnessed, incorporating appropriate gestures.
- Use the provided naming ceremony vocabulary (عقيقة، عيدان حفلة التسمية اليوم، أخت زوجة عمي هي التي أنجبت، سيُذبح العقيقة لأن عدد الحاضرين كبير جدا، ستكثر المأدبة) to talk about a naming ceremony, pairing each phrase with a suitable gesture.
- Perform a short spoken description of a special occasion while using gestures that match the meaning of their words, in a role-play context.
- Distinguish between gestures appropriate for formal occasions (e.g., a handshake at a mosque) and informal occasions (e.g., joyful ululation at a wedding), drawing on the formal/informal register work from Week 11.
