Learning Objectives

Indicator: B8.2.1.4.2 - Show proficiency in initiating, maintaining and closing conversations about familiar topics using cultural symbols and practices.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Use the greeting “السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ” (peace be upon you and God’s mercy) to initiate a conversation with a Muslim elder or peer.
Use “أَنَا سَعِيدٌ بِلِقَائِكَ” (I am happy to meet you) and “فُرْصَةٌ سَعِيدَةٌ” (a happy opportunity) to maintain a conversation politely.
Use “أَرَاكَ قَرِيبًا” (see you soon) and “إِلَى اللِّقَاءِ، مَعَ السَّلَامَةِ” (until we meet again, with safety) to close a conversation appropriately.
Initiate, maintain, and close a five-exchange conversation with a partner on a familiar topic such as Eid, naming ceremonies, or visiting a neighbour, using at least three of the formulaic expressions.
Respond appropriately to the opening greeting with “وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ” and to a closing with “مَعَ السَّلَامَةِ” when they are spoken by the other person.
