Learning Objectives
Indicator: B7.6.1.1.2 - Explore the early interactions between Europeans and the indigenous people
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Describe at least three ways in which the Portuguese and other Europeans first interacted with the indigenous people of the Gold Coast.
- Explain the significance of the meeting between the Portuguese and Nana Kwamena Ansa I of Elmina.
- Identify the items Europeans brought to the Gold Coast and the local goods they exchanged for them.
- Locate on a map the areas where Europeans first settled, including Elmina, Cape Coast, and Accra.
- State the purposes served by some castles and forts built by Europeans along the coast.
