SHS1 Engineering · Semester 1, Week 12

Ethics and Professional Practice

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.3.LI.3 - Distinguish between ethical and unethical behaviours in engineering practice.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define ethical and unethical behaviour in engineering practice using their own words, drawing on examples discussed in previous lessons (Weeks 10 and 11).
  2. Categorise given engineering scenarios as ethical or unethical, justifying each classification with at least one clear reason.
  3. Compare and contrast pairs of similar behaviours (for example, reporting an error versus hiding an error) to identify the ethical boundary between them.
  4. Create a concept map or web that organises at least five ethical and five unethical behaviours in engineering practice, showing connections between related behaviours.
  5. Critique a short video case study, identifying at least three ethical or unethical behaviours and explaining their consequences for engineers, clients and the public.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Managing Talk for Learning: In a moderated discussion, learners outline what they consider to be ethical and unethical behaviours in engineering practice. Summarise learners' thoughts using concept maps or webbing Building on what others say: Learners build on what others say and catalogue ethical and unethical behaviours in engineering practice.
Digital Learning: Learners watch videos on ethical and unethical behaviours in engineering practice and share observations with their colleagues.

Assessment (1.1.3.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
