SHS3 General Science · Semester 1, Week 17

Essentials for Survival

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.2 - Demonstrate and explain the structure and function of the movement of muscle tissues.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Describe the structure of skeletal muscle tissue, including the arrangement of actin and myosin filaments within the sarcomere.
  2. Explain the sliding filament model of muscle contraction, using the terms actin, myosin, cross-bridge, and sarcomere correctly.
  3. Demonstrate muscle movement using a simple model and connect the demonstration to the events happening inside real muscle fibres.
  4. Distinguish between the roles of antagonistic muscle pairs in producing movement at a joint, using the biceps and triceps as an example.
  5. Analyse and evaluate scenarios where muscle function is impaired (for example, fatigue or cramp) and suggest explanations based on the physiology of contraction.

Essentials for Survival (2.1)
Content standard
3.2.1.CS.2 - Develop an understanding of the relationships between bones, skeleton and muscles and the principles underlying the movement of various parts of the human body. 3.2.1.LO.2 Demonstrate how movement occurs in parts of the human body.
Indicator
3.2.1.LI.2 - Demonstrate and explain the structure and function of the movement of muscle tissues.
Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 17 (Week 17 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Initiating Talk for Learning: Let learners think-pair-share using video, pictures, and personal experience to describe how muscles bring about movement in humans. Discuss how challenges arise for human movement and encourage learners to appreciate the diversity in limb.
NB: Explain the sliding filament model of muscle.

Assessment (3.x.2.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
