Learning Objectives

Indicator: B9.1.3.1.1 - Discuss the causes and prevention of poor sanitation in the school/home/community/workshop/site/laboratory.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least five causes of poor sanitation in the school, home, community, workshop, site, or laboratory.
  2. Explain how each cause of poor sanitation leads to specific health problems.
  3. Propose at least three practical prevention strategies for poor sanitation in their school and home.
  4. Demonstrate proper waste sorting and disposal in a practical recycling activity.
  5. Present a short group report on the causes and prevention of poor sanitation found during a school walk-through.

1. Discuss the causes of poor sanitation in the home, school, community, workshop/site/laboratory.
E.g., Littering around, poor disposal of waste, indiscriminate defecation.
2. Discuss ways of preventing poor sanitation in school and home.
E.g., Putting bins at vantage points for waste to be put in instead of putting it on the ground.
3. Undertake a project on the need for people to keep the school and community clean.
E.g., clean-up exercise in the school and community.
4. Undertake a project in recycling of waste, in groups.
Note: Invite an expert from the District Assembly or the Community to assist with the recycling project.
