JHS3 English Language · Term 1, Week 5
English Sounds
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B9.1.3.1.2 - Produce consonant clusters in context
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify consonant clusters in words they hear and read, including clusters such as pl, pr, cr, cl, tr, sm, sp, spl, spr and gh.
- Pronounce two-letter and three-letter consonant clusters correctly in isolated words.
- Produce words with consonant clusters accurately in connected speech, such as in sentences and short passages.
- Distinguish between consonant clusters and single consonant sounds when listening to spoken English.
- Use words with consonant clusters confidently in their own speaking, in pairs and small groups.
This lesson builds directly on the work done in Term 1, Week 5 on producing /r/ and /l/ sounds, since many consonant clusters such as pr, tr, cr, pl and cl combine these sounds with other consonants. The lesson stops short of word stress, which is scheduled for Week 6.
