Engineering Materials, Tools, and Machines

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.1.LI.2 - Describe twist drills and use drilling and grinding machines.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Describe the twist drill and identify its major parts (shank, body, flutes, point, and cutting edges) with at least four parts correctly labelled on a diagram.
  2. Explain the functions of the major parts of a drilling machine and a grinding machine.
  3. Demonstrate the correct procedure for setting up and operating a drilling machine to produce a hole in a mild steel workpiece, following all safety rules.
  4. Demonstrate the correct procedure for using a grinding machine to sharpen a twist drill or dress a workpiece, following all safety rules.
  5. Evaluate a demonstration of drilling and grinding operations by identifying at least two correct practices and two safety violations observed.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Group work /Collaborative learning
- In mixed ability groups, assist learners to describe the twist drill and perform operations using drilling and grinding machines
Experiential Learning:
- At the workshop, assist learners to describe the twist drill and identify the major parts of the drilling and grinding machines and brainstorm their functions.
- Visit a local workshop with learners comporting themselves and help them to identify the twist drill, observe and demonstrate the use of the grinding and drilling machines.
