SHS2 Applied Technology · Semester 1, Week 8

Engineering Materials, Tools, and Machines

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.1.LI.3 - Demonstrate the use of lathe and shaping machines.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify and label the major parts of the lathe machine (headstock, tailstock, carriage, bed, tool post, chuck) and state the function of each part.
  2. Identify and label the major parts of the shaping machine (ram, table, column, base, tool head, stroke adjustment) and state the function of each part.
  3. Set up a work piece on the lathe machine using correct safety procedures, including proper mounting in the chuck and selection of cutting speed.
  4. Demonstrate the basic operation of the shaping machine to produce a flat surface on a mild steel work piece, following the correct sequence of operations.
  5. Apply health and safety rules when operating both machines and explain the consequences of unsafe practices in the workshop.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Group work/collaborative learning:
- In mixed ability groups, assist learners to identify the major parts of the lathe and the shaping machines and brainstorm their functions in the school workshop. Experiential Learning
- Visit a local workshop with learners comporting themselves and help them to identify, observe and demonstrate the use of the lathe and the shaping machines .
