SHS2 Applied Technology · Semester 1, Week 7
Engineering Materials, Tools, and Machines
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.2.1.LI.1 - Describe various heat treatment processes with engineering examples and explain equilibrium diagrams.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define heat treatment and list at least four distinct heat treatment processes (annealing, normalising, hardening, tempering) with their purposes.
- Describe the sequence of steps involved in each heat treatment process, including heating rates, holding temperatures, and cooling methods.
- Explain the behaviour of plain carbon steel as shown on the iron-carbon equilibrium diagram, identifying key temperatures and phases (ferrite, pearlite, austenite, cementite).
- Apply knowledge of heat treatment to suggest appropriate processes for specific engineering components (e.g., chisels, springs, gears, cutting tools).
- Investigate and report on conventional quenching techniques for plain carbon steel, evaluating the effects of different quenching media on the final properties of the steel.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Group work/collaborative learning: Group learners to discuss and tolerate each other's views on heat treatment of plain carbon steels using video. And to describe the heat treatment processes. Assist learners to use the iron carbon equilibrium diagram to explain the behaviour of plain carbon steel when heated and cooled. Problem-Based Learning: Learners investigate the conventional technique for quenching a plain carbon steel when heated and report to the class Assessment (2.2.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Heat treatment equipment - video clips/YouTube of heat treatment process - Grinding, drilling - lathe and shaping machines - video/YouTube - Educational trips - Chart - real object - video clips - Industrial visit - Sand casting equipment
