SHS1 Applied Technology · Semester 2, Week 5

Engineering Materials, Tools and Machines

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.4.1.LI.2 - Explain the uses of various types of measuring, marking out, holding, striking and cutting tools

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least five measuring tools, four marking out tools, five holding tools, three striking tools and five cutting tools used in metalwork when shown real objects or charts.
  2. Explain the specific use of each tool and match it correctly to the correct stage of a metalwork project (measuring, marking out, holding, striking or cutting).
  3. Justify the choice of one tool over another for a given metalwork task, giving at least one reason for the choice (for example, why a surface plate is used before a scriber, or why a ball-peen hammer is preferred for riveting).
  4. Demonstrate correct and safe handling of at least three tools in the workshop, following the safety rules learned in the previous week’s lesson.
  5. Work collaboratively in mixed groups to brainstorm, share and present the uses of tools, respecting the contributions of all group members.
