SHS3 Engineering · Semester 1, Week 3
Engineering in Society
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.1.1.LI.3 - Describing engineering solutions for attaining specific SDGs.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Recall at least five SDGs and state one engineering challenge or opportunity linked to each.
- Describe at least four specific engineering solutions (products, systems, or processes) that contribute to attaining selected SDGs such as SDG 6 (Clean Water), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
- Explain how a given engineering solution works, including its basic components and the problem it addresses.
- Categorise engineering solutions according to the SDG they primarily support.
- Discuss, in small groups, the benefits and possible limitations of an engineering solution for a chosen SDG using evidence and reasoned arguments.

Collaborative Learning: In their small groups, learners discuss selected SDGs and how engineering can be used to provide solutions. Groups share findings with the whole class for comments. Summarise learners' thoughts using webbing or maps for each SDG and proffered solutions. Assessment (3.1.1.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Projector, laptop and videos on the SDGs - Assorted components - Tools and machinery as may be required to execute the projects
