SHS3 Engineering · Semester 1, Week 4
Engineering in Society
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.1.1.LI.4 - Designing and developing innovative solutions towards the attainment of SDGs
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify an engineering-related SDG challenge within their school or community that is amenable to a practical design solution.
- Apply a structured design process (problem identification, ideation, prototyping, and testing) to conceive an innovative solution for a selected SDG.
- Construct a working model or prototype of their proposed solution using available materials and tools.
- Present their prototype to the class, explaining how it addresses a specific SDG target and defending their design choices through reasoned responses to questions.
- Critically evaluate classmates’ project presentations by giving constructive feedback that considers effectiveness, feasibility, and social impact.

Problem-based Learning: Learners in groups select and execute group projects by conceiving and developing innovative engineering solutions to address at least one SDG. The groups present their projects to the class for comments. Assessment (3.1.1.AS.4). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Projector, laptop and videos on the SDGs - Assorted components - Tools and machinery as may be required to execute the projects
