SHS1 Engineering · Semester 1, Week 5

Engineering in Society

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.5 - Explain the unique knowledge requirement of the disciplines - careers.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least three engineering disciplines and state the unique body of knowledge required for each.
  2. Explain the difference between the knowledge required by an engineering discipline and the common skills shared across all engineering fields (building on Week 4).
  3. Describe the pathway from secondary school through to a specific engineering career, including the subjects and qualifications required.
  4. Create a concept map showing the unique knowledge requirements of at least four engineering disciplines.
  5. Justify why an engineer in one discipline cannot simply perform the work of an engineer in another discipline without additional training.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Managing Talk for Learning: In a moderated discussion, learners explain the unique knowledge requirement of the engineering disciplines. Organise or summarise their thoughts using webbing or concept maps
Building on What Others say: Other groups add to the content presented by each group in a respectful manner. Groups should be encouraged to tolerate others' views.

Assessment (1.1.1.AS.5). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.

Teaching and Learning Resources:
- Projector
- Laptop and videos on engineering works
