Engineering Design

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.1.LI.4 - Formulate research objectives for a given problem.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define a research objective and distinguish it from a research question, using examples from everyday engineering problems.
  2. Formulate at least three clear, specific, and measurable research objectives for a given problem case study.
  3. Categorise research objectives as either general (broad aim) or specific (measurable sub-aims) for a given problem.
  4. Evaluate research objectives written by peers against a simple checklist of qualities (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound).
  5. Present and defend formulated research objectives to the class, responding respectfully to critique and suggestions from other groups.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Collaborative Learning: Learners work in groups on a given case study to document research objectives for a given problem. Learners will make a presentation on the solution to the class.
Problem-Based Learning: Learners work on a case-study to develop solution objectives and make presentations to the whole class. Other groups critique and make suggestions. Encourage learners to tolerate the views of others.

Assessment (1.3.1.AS.4). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
