SHS1 Engineering · Semester 2, Week 5

Energy Efficiency and Conservation

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.2.3.LI.2 - Use various instruments to accurately measure electrical and non-electrical quantities.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Measure voltage, current, and resistance in a small solar photovoltaic (PV) circuit using a digital multimeter, reading each quantity to the correct unit and scale.
  2. Measure non-electrical quantities, including solar irradiance (using a pyranometer or solar power meter), temperature (using a thermometer or infrared thermometer), and wind speed (using an anemometer) in a renewable energy installation.
  3. Connect measuring instruments correctly in series (for current) and in parallel (for voltage) without damaging the instrument or the circuit.
  4. Record readings from measuring instruments with appropriate units and reasonable precision, and report at least one source of measurement error for each reading.
  5. Compare their measured values with expected values from nameplates or standard conditions, and explain any significant difference between the two.
