SHS2 Physics · Semester 2, Week 4

Electrostatics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.3.1.LI.3 - Determine the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Recall the definition of capacitance and state its SI unit and formula (C = Q/V).
  2. State the factors that affect the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor: plate area, distance of separation, and the permittivity of the dielectric material.
  3. Apply the formula C = ε₀A/d to calculate the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor with air as the dielectric.
  4. Use the formula C = ε₀εᵣA/d to calculate capacitance when a dielectric material is placed between the plates.
  5. Compare and explain how changing each factor (area, distance, dielectric) affects the capacitance, using strategic reasoning to predict outcomes.

Talk for Learning: Use the factors that affect the capacitance that affect parallel plate capacitor i.e., the area of the plate, the permittivity of the dielectric material and the distance of separation between the plates.
Explore contributions of vulnerable groups in the class.
Assessment (2.3.1.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
