SHS1 Physics · Semester 2, Week 6

Electrostatics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.1.LI.1 - Define charge as a fundamental property of matter (like mass).

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define electric charge as a fundamental property of matter that causes it to experience a force in an electric field.
  2. Explain that charge exists in two kinds, positive and negative, and that neutral bodies have equal amounts of both.
  3. Compare and contrast charge with mass as fundamental properties of matter.
  4. Use a concept mind map to organise the fundamental properties of matter and show where charge fits among them.
  5. Describe everyday situations in which the presence of charge is observed.

Electric Field, Magnetic Field and Electronics (Strand 3)
Sub-strand
Electrostatics (3.1)
Content standard
1.3.1.CS.2 - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the differences between the two kinds of particles (positive and negative) that are involved in electric interactions. 1.3.1.LO.2 Apply the knowledge on charges to describe forces based on like or opposite charges respectively.
Indicator
1.3.1.LI.1 - Define charge as a fundamental property of matter (like mass).
Suggested placement
Semester 2, Week 6 (Week 26 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Concept/Mind Mapping: Using concept mind mapping, learners describe the fundamental properties of matter and discuss how charge is a fundamental property (positive, negative and neutral properties).
Encourage the appreciation and valuing of the skills and abilities of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disabilities.
Assessment (1.3.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
