SHS1 Physics · Semester 2, Week 7

Electrostatics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.1.LI.2 - Explain the conservation of charge and its behaviour.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the law of conservation of charge in their own words.
  2. Apply the law of conservation of charge to calculate the net charge before and after a process.
  3. Explain, using examples, how charge is transferred (by friction, contact, and induction) without being created or destroyed.
  4. Predict the final charge on objects after they interact, using the principle of charge conservation.
  5. Demonstrate through discussion how the conservation of charge relates to the conservation of matter, showing respect for diverse contributions from classmates.

Electric Field, Magnetic Field and Electronics (Strand 3)
Sub-strand
Electrostatics (3.1)
Content standard
1.3.1.CS.2 - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the differences between the two kinds of particles (positive and negative) that are involved in electric interactions. 1.3.1.LO.2 Apply the knowledge on charges to describe forces based on like or opposite charges respectively.
Indicator
1.3.1.LI.2 - Explain the conservation of charge and its behaviour.
Suggested placement
Semester 2, Week 7 (Week 27 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Source document note

The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:

  • indicator text - p.63: the document prints this learning indicator code as 1.3.1.LI.1.2
  • exemplars - p.63: the document prints this assessment code as 1.3.1.AS.1.2

Concept/Mind Mapping: Learners discuss the laws of conservation of the fundamental properties of matter and relate it to charges.
Encourage the appreciation and valuing of the skills and abilities of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disabilities.
Assessment (1.3.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
