SHS1 Physics · Semester 2, Week 8

Electrostatics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.1.LI.3 - Differentiate between the two charges (positive and negative).

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the two types of electric charge and the symbols used to represent them (positive charge, +, and negative charge, -).
  2. Describe the properties of positive charges (protons) and negative charges (electrons), including their relative location in the atom and their role in electric interactions.
  3. Distinguish between positive and negative charges based on observable behaviours, such as attraction and repulsion.
  4. Predict the behaviour of two charged objects when brought near each other, using the rule that like charges repel and opposite charges attract.
  5. Apply the concept of positive and negative charges to explain everyday electrostatic phenomena in Ghanaian settings, such as a balloon sticking to a wall or the shock felt when touching a car door.

Electric Field, Magnetic Field and Electronics (Strand 3)
Sub-strand
Electrostatics (3.1)
Content standard
1.3.1.CS.2 - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the differences between the two kinds of particles (positive and negative) that are involved in electric interactions. 1.3.1.LO.2 Apply the knowledge on charges to describe forces based on like or opposite charges respectively.
Indicator
1.3.1.LI.3 - Differentiate between the two charges (positive and negative).
Suggested placement
Semester 2, Week 8 (Week 28 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Source document note

The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:

  • indicator text - p.63: the document prints this learning indicator code as 1.3.1.LI.1.3
  • exemplars - p.63: the document prints this assessment code as 1.3.1.AS.1.3
