Electronic Components and Circuits

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.5.2.LI.10 - Convert moving coil instrument into voltmeter and ammeter

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain the principle of operation of a moving coil instrument, including the roles of the coil, magnet, spring, and pointer.
  2. Describe the construction of a moving coil instrument and identify its main parts from a diagram or actual instrument.
  3. Calculate the value of a multiplier resistor needed to convert a moving coil instrument into a voltmeter, given the meter’s internal resistance and full-scale deflection current.
  4. Calculate the value of a shunt resistor needed to convert a moving coil instrument into an ammeter, given the meter’s internal resistance and full-scale deflection current.
  5. Convert a moving coil instrument into a voltmeter and an ammeter in the workshop or through simulation, and verify the readings against a standard multimeter.

Collaborative Learning: With the use of the internet, engage learners in mixed ability groups to undergo the following activities:
- Explain principle of operation of the moving coil measuring instruments
- Describe the construction of the Moving coil instruments.
- Outline the advantages and disadvantages of the moving coil instrument
Experiential Learning: Engage learners to work in mixed gender groups to use shunts and multipliers to convert a moving coil instrument into
- voltmeter
- Ammeter

Assessment (2.5.2.AS.10). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
