SHS2 Applied Technology · Semester 2, Week 18
Electronic Components and Circuits
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.5.2.LI.8 - Describe the types of control systems and give practical examples
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define a control system and identify its basic components from a block diagram.
- Differentiate between open-loop and closed-loop control systems, citing at least two practical examples of each.
- Draw and label the block diagrams of both open-loop and closed-loop control systems.
- Explain the function of each block in a control system and how feedback affects system behaviour.
- Justify, with reasoning, why a given appliance (e.g., a refrigerator) uses a closed-loop system rather than an open-loop system.

Collaborative Learning/Talk for learning: With the use of the internet, engage learners in mixed ability groups to undergo the following activities: - Explain control systems. - Outline the types of control systems and give examples i.e. Open loop e.g. Water heater, Electric Bulb, washing machine etc. and closed loop e.g. Toaster, refrigerator etc. - Through a whole class discussion, task learners to present their findings. Experiential Learning/Project -based learning: Engage learners to work in mixed gender groups to: - Draw the block diagrams of the types of control systems e.g. open loop and closed loop. - Outline the functions of each block. Assessment (2.5.2.AS.8). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Computers installed with multism software - Resistors, Capacitors, Inductors - multimeters - the use of the internet
