Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.3.2.LI.2 - Discuss the factors that affect the magnitude of the magnetic force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the formula for the magnetic force on a current-carrying conductor as F = BIl sinθ and identify each symbol with its correct unit.
  2. Discuss at least three factors (magnetic flux density, current, length of conductor, and angle between conductor and field) that affect the magnitude of the magnetic force, explaining how each factor influences the force.
  3. Calculate the magnetic force on a current-carrying conductor using F = BIl sinθ for given values of B, I, l, and θ.
  4. Determine the angle θ at which the magnetic force is maximum or zero, and justify the answer using the sine function.
  5. Apply the concept of magnetic force on conductors to explain a practical situation, such as the working principle of a simple electric motor or a loudspeaker.
