SHS3 Physics · Semester 2, Week 8

Electromagnetic Induction & Applications

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.3.3.LI.3 - Describe the factors that affect induced emf and explain direction of induced current using mnemonics of the Fleming’s Right Hand Rule.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the four factors that affect the magnitude of induced emf in a conductor moving through a magnetic field.
  2. Explain, using the relationship emf = BLv, how each factor (magnetic flux density, length of conductor, velocity) influences the size of the induced emf.
  3. State Fleming’s Right Hand Rule correctly from memory.
  4. Apply Fleming’s Right Hand Rule using the “First finger = Field, thuMb = Motion, seCond finger = Current” mnemonic to determine the direction of induced current in a given scenario.
  5. Use Fleming’s Right Hand Rule to solve at least three numerical or descriptive problems involving a conductor moving in a magnetic field.
