SHS2 Agriculture · Semester 2, Week 14

Economics for Agriculture

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.5.1.LI.3 - Create demand and supply schedules and prepare graphs to show the determinants of price for an agricultural commodity.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Construct a demand schedule and a supply schedule for a given agricultural commodity using hypothetical price and quantity data.
  2. Plot demand and supply curves on the same graph from the schedules they create.
  3. Identify the equilibrium price and equilibrium quantity where demand and supply intersect on their graphs.
  4. Explain how a change in a determinant of demand or supply (such as income, input costs, or weather) shifts the curve and changes the equilibrium price.
  5. Predict and illustrate the effect of a specific determinant on the price of a chosen Ghanaian agricultural commodity using a correctly labelled graph.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Inquiry-based learning: Learners in a mixed-gender groups watch a video on the determinants of price for an agricultural commodity and prepare a graph on the demand and supply schedules. In the same groups learners mimic a demand and supply scenario.
- Project based learning: In mixed- ability groups, learners design a questionnaire with a maximum of eight questions on supply and demand schedules and determinants of prices. Learners administer the question at the school market and present their report.
Assessment (2.5.1.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
