Economic Production of Small Ruminants
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.2 - Organise and produce small and large ruminants common in the locality for meat.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify and list the common small and large ruminants reared for meat in their locality, stating at least two characteristics of each.
- Select and justify an appropriate site for a semi-intensive ruminant farm based on criteria such as drainage, pasture availability, security and proximity to water.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for sourcing, housing and daily managing (feeding, watering, vaccination and record keeping) small and large ruminants under a semi-intensive system.
- Design a simple seven-day daily management schedule for a ruminant farm, showing feed, water, health checks and records.
- Assess the economic viability of a semi-intensive ruminant enterprise by calculating basic costs of stock, feed and vaccines against expected meat returns.

Project-Based Learning: All Learners select a site for semi-intensive small and large ruminant farms. Obtain small and large ruminants, vaccines etc. from agro-input dealers. Set the small large ruminants on site and visit the site daily to provide feed, water and vaccination to animals and to take records for discussion. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Community market - Cold storage facilities - Video documentaries - Functional internet facilities - Computer - Projector - Smartphone - Pen - Small and large ruminants - Feed - Water - Vaccines - Pocket - Advertising billboards - Information Centres and FM stations * Posters - Weighing scale * Plastic - notebooks - or paper bags. Assessment (2.2.2.AS.2).
