SHS2 Agricultural Science · Semester 2, Week 3

Economic Production of Crops

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.1.LI.3 - Carry out required post-harvest practices and market crops produced.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Describe the major post-harvest practices (harvesting at the right maturity, drying, threshing, shelling, cleaning, grading, packaging, and storage) for at least one cereal (maize), one legume (groundnut or cowpea), and one tuber crop (cassava or yam) and explain why each practice is necessary.
  2. Demonstrate correct post-harvest handling of a selected arable crop, including proper drying, cleaning, and packaging, following the relevant steps in the correct order.
  3. Identify and apply appropriate storage methods and containers for selected arable crops to minimise losses from pests, mould, and spoilage.
  4. Calculate the expected profit or loss from selling a given quantity of a produced crop, using simple records of expenses and sales (e.g., unit price × quantity sold minus total costs).
  5. Work collaboratively in mixed-ability and mixed-gender groups to market harvested produce, keep simple sales records, and render accurate accounts to the class.
