Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.2.2.LI.2 - Explain how cholesterol is transported in the blood by high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and the role each of them plays in the body.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- State why cholesterol cannot dissolve in blood on its own and must be carried by lipoproteins.
- Distinguish between high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) in terms of structure, composition and density.
- Explain the roles of LDL (delivering cholesterol to body cells) and HDL (returning excess cholesterol to the liver) in cholesterol transport.
- Use a simple model or diagram to trace the journey of cholesterol from the liver to body cells and back.
- Describe what the terms “good cholesterol” and “bad cholesterol” mean in everyday language, using accurate scientific reasoning.
