SHS3 Biomedical Science · Semester 2, Week 1

Diseases and Disorders

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.2.LI.3 - Describe how the concentrations of these complexes (HDL and LDL) affect a person’s risk of heart disease.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the normal (healthy) concentration ranges for total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol in an adult’s blood.
  2. Explain, using the “good” and “bad” cholesterol idea, why high LDL concentration or low HDL concentration raises the risk of heart disease, blocked vessels and stroke.
  3. Interpret a set of sample cholesterol measurement results and classify the person’s risk level as low, moderate or high.
  4. Use a simple ratio (total cholesterol divided by HDL) to compare the heart disease risk of two different people and justify which one needs medical attention first.
  5. Critically evaluate a claim about cholesterol (for example, an advertisement or a friend’s opinion) using the concentration knowledge gained in this lesson.

Content standard
3.2.2.CS.1 - Demonstrate an understanding of the function of cholesterol in the body and its role in heart disease. 3.2.2.LO.1 Describe the different types of lipids in the body, explain how cholesterol-lipoprotein complexes affect risk of heart diseases and how risk of heart diseases may be assessed.
Indicator
3.2.2.LI.3 - Describe how the concentrations of these complexes (HDL and LDL) affect a person's risk of heart disease.
Suggested placement
Semester 2, Week 1 (Week 21 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Initiating Talk for Learning: Invite a resource person to give a talk or show a video or a summarized writeup on a chart on how HDL and LDL are measured and the normal concentrations of these complexes. Class discuss how high levels of LDL cholesterol or low levels of HDL cholesterol, raises risk for heart disease, blocked vessels and stroke.
Teaching and Learning Resources:
- Sticks and balls from local materials sketch boards or pads
- Internet
- Textbooks
- Writing board
- Projector
- Sample cholesterol measurement results
- Sample angiograms or images
Assessment (3.2.2.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
