SHS1 Robotics · Semester 1, Week 18

Digital and Analogue System Design

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.2.1.LI.2 - Properly label and explain block and schematic diagram representations of electronic systems.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Label all major components of a block diagram, including input, process, output, and feedback blocks, with at least 90% accuracy.
  2. Label the standard symbols used in schematic diagrams for resistors, capacitors, diodes, LEDs, transistors, batteries, and switches.
  3. Explain the function of each block in a block diagram and each component symbol in a schematic diagram using correct technical vocabulary.
  4. Translate a simple written circuit narrative into both a block diagram and a schematic diagram with all parts correctly labelled.
  5. Write a descriptive summary of a given schematic or block diagram, identifying the purpose of the system and the role of each component.

Content standard
1.2.1.CS.1 - 1.2.1.CS.1 Demonstrate familiarity with the concepts and principles that underpin the application of analogue and digital components in circuit building. 1.2.1.LO.1 Correctly label the components of an electronic circuit, state their functions and interpret block and schematic diagrams.
Indicator
1.2.1.LI.2 - Properly label and explain block and schematic diagram representations of electronic systems.
Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 18 (Week 18 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Project-Based Learning: Introduce learners to schematic and block notations. Develop block and schematic representations of given circuit narratives. Learners then pick other schematic and block diagrams and, write descriptive summaries of what they observe, and share them with the class.

Assessment (1.2.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
