Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.3.2.1.4 - Identify and use demonstratives: this/that, these/those - concepts and ideas.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the demonstratives (this, that, these, those) in given sentences and texts.
  2. Distinguish between singular demonstratives (this, that) and plural demonstratives (these, those), and between near (this, these) and far (that, those) references.
  3. Use this, that, these and those correctly to refer to concepts and ideas (not only physical objects) in their own sentences.
  4. Substitute the correct demonstrative in sentences where the number (singular/plural) and distance (near/far) are specified.
  5. Write a short paragraph that uses all four demonstratives to refer to ideas or concepts discussed in class.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Briefly revise nouns and articles by having learners identify them in sentences.
- Provide a text having the demonstratives with emphasis on the demonstratives (this, that, these, those). Read it out.
- List the demonstratives and have learners read out and observe the use of the demonstratives in the sentences. Working in small groups, each group writes a number of sentences with each of the demonstratives introduced.
