Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.1.LI.2 - Describe how the elements and principles of art and design are used to generate ideas for artworks.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Explain at least four ways in which elements of art (such as line, colour, texture and shape) can spark ideas for a new artwork.
Describe how principles of design (such as balance, contrast, rhythm and emphasis) guide the arrangement of ideas in a composition.
Analyse two natural objects from their immediate environment and identify the elements and principles visible in them.
Present a short oral or visual description showing how an idea for an artwork could be developed from a natural object found on their school compound.
Create a simple idea sketch that demonstrates the use of at least two elements and two principles of design.

Content standard: 1.3.1.CS.1 - 1.3.1.CS.1 Demonstrate knowledge and application of elements and principles of art and design thinking in the real world (environment). 1.3.1.LO.1 Apply elements and principles of art and design and design thinking to generate ideas visually, material, spatial and experiential environments in response to given societal problems using natural objects from the immediate environment.

Experiential Learning: In small groups, analyse designs and objects from the natural and man-made environment to determine the element and principles of art and design that can be found in them.
Structuring talk for Learning: In a class discussion, deduce how the elements and principles of design have been used in the designs from natural objects.
project-based Learning: In groups, prepare a 3-minutes video/photographic presentation on how the elements and principles of art and design can be used to develop ideas for making art and design work.
