JHS3 Creative Arts And Design · Term 1, Week 3

Design in Nature and Manmade Environment

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B9.1.1.1.3 - Research to identify and record in writing what constitutes the principles of design and describe how they are used to organise the elements of design into building blocks for creative expression of design in nature and the manmade environment.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Research and list the principles of design, including variety and proportion, using at least two different sources (textbooks, internet, or observation of the local environment).
  • Describe in writing how each principle of design organises the elements of design (such as line, shape, colour, form, value) into a unified composition.
  • Identify and record at least three examples of variety and proportion found in natural designs and three found in manmade designs in their local area.
  • Apply the principles of variety and proportion to create a simple design of their own using available materials, and explain in one paragraph how the principles guided their choices.
  • Present their findings orally to the class, organising their ideas in a clear order with relevant detail.
