Design in Nature and Manmade Environment

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B8.1.1.1.2 - Research to identify and record what constitutes the ‘elements of design’ in nature and the ‘principles of design’ for creative expression of design ideas.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define the elements of design (texture and colour) and the principles of design (contrast, emphasis and unity) in their own words with accurate examples.
  2. Identify and record at least five examples of texture and colour found in the natural environment around their school or community.
  3. Identify and record at least five examples of texture and colour found in the manmade environment such as buildings, fabrics, vehicles or signage.
  4. Explain how at least one principle of design (contrast, emphasis or unity) is used to organise texture and colour in a given design example.
  5. Create a simple observational record, using sketching, colour notes or a written list, that documents elements and principles of design found in both nature and the manmade environment.

2. Explore the natural and manmade environments to identify and document examples of elements of design for reflection and discussion.
3. Reflect on knowledge gained from discussions to create patterns that reflect selected elements of design using available manual and digital tools, materials and techniques for display and sharing. Examples: texture, colour
