Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.2.LI.2 - Categorise social and material conditions that produced designs in ancient cultures.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least three social conditions (religion, politics, socio-cultural activities) and three material conditions (available raw materials, climate, technology) that influenced design production in ancient cultures.
- Categorise specific ancient designs (e.g., Egyptian jewellery, Ghanaian kente, Greek pottery, Ashanti stools) according to the social or material conditions that produced them.
- Create a categorisation chart that sorts at least eight ancient designs under the correct social or material condition headings.
- Explain in one paragraph how a specific material condition, such as the availability of clay or gold, shaped the design of a particular ancient artefact.
- Compare and contrast the social conditions that produced designs in two different ancient cultures, presenting the comparison orally to the class.
