SHS2 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 10
Design and Realisation
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.4.LI.1 - Draw exploded views of final solutions.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Explain the purpose and function of an exploded view in communicating a design solution.
- Identify the relationship between parts in an exploded view and their positions in the assembled artefact.
- Draw a neat exploded view of a simple artefact using drawing instruments, showing correct part alignment along a common axis.
- Label the parts of the exploded view with their correct names.
- Justify the use of exploded views in the design and realisation process, explaining how they aid construction planning.

Managing talk for learning: Review learners' knowledge in the design process through whole class discussion to bring out the new topic. Managing talk for learning/ Experiential learning: With the use of videos, simulations and board illustrations, explain the exploded view. Managing talk for learning: With the use of sketches, board illustrations, pictures and drawing instruments demonstrate the drawing of exploded views of objects. Activity-based learning, Talk for learning: With the use of drawing instrument and the understanding of the exploded view concept, draw the exploded view of a given final solution" Managing talk for learning: Explain working drawing with the use of sketches and charts. From the sketches, demonstrate the making of a working drawing of an artefact using drawing instruments. Assessment (2.1.4.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Models - Charts - reference books - drawing studio - access to internet - LCD Projector - sketches. - Drawing instruments
