SHS1 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 1, Week 14

Design and Drawing for Manufacture

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.2.1.LI.4 - Demonstrate the importance of freehand sketching and visualisation of objects in the design of products.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain at least three reasons why freehand sketching is an essential first step in the design of manufactured products.
  2. Produce a clear freehand sketch of a simple product idea using only pencil, paper and eraser, showing proportions and basic details.
  3. Describe how visualisation helps a designer to transform a mental image into a workable design concept.
  4. Give constructive feedback on a peer’s freehand sketch, focusing on clarity of the idea rather than artistic quality.
  5. Justify the place of freehand sketching within the design process they studied in the previous week (Semester 1, Week 13).

Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 14 (Week 14 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Project-Based Learning: Let learners in think-pair-share use only pencil, paper and eraser to sketch any idea or concept they may want to design using freehand. Learners discuss their sketches reasoning and give feedbacks.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- * Drawing instruments * Paper boxes
- * Textbooks * Metal sheets
- * Supplementary reading materials. * Drawing instruments
Assessment (1.2.1.AS.4). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
