SHS1 Computing · Semester 1, Week 1

Data Storage and Manipulation

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.1 - Describe Information as Bit Patterns

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Define the terms “bit” and “byte” in their own words and state how many bits make one byte.
  • Explain that all forms of information (text, numbers, images, audio, video) are stored in a computer as patterns of 0s and 1s.
  • Convert small decimal numbers (0 to 15) into 4-bit binary patterns and read binary patterns back as decimal numbers.
  • Give at least three everyday examples of information being represented as bit patterns inside a computer.
  • Demonstrate, through group discussion or presentation, why binary (two symbols) is used instead of decimal (ten symbols) in digital computers.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Group Work/Collaborative Learning: Interactive presentations, video analysis and debate. e.g., Divide the class into two mixed-ability groups and task them to Describe Information as Bit Patterns. The groups must respond to inclusivity and equity. For example, learners with visual impairment, dyslexia, and dysgraphia should be considered.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- * Notepad or exercise book * Pen * Smartphones * Laptops
- * Desktop computers * Tablets * TV and Radio * Open Educational Resources (including YouTube, MOOCs -
- Udemy/Coursera, Khan Academy, and TESSA)
- * The iBox/iCampus (CENDLOS) * Productivity tools ix. Subject-based application software * Instructional Laboratories (with multimedia equipment and smartboards) * Maintenance and repair workshops
Assessment (1.1.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall.
