B4 Computing · Term 2, Week 7

Data, Sources and Usage

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B4.1.3.1.5 - Demonstrate basic calculations on sample data e.g. sum, percentage, average etc.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Add a set of sample data values to find the sum and state the answer correctly.
  2. Calculate the average (mean) of a set of sample data by dividing the sum by the number of values.
  3. Express one quantity as a percentage of another quantity using the formula (part ÷ whole) × 100.
  4. Apply sum, average and percentage calculations to data collected from their own school or home environment.
  5. Communicate their calculation results clearly to classmates, explaining the steps they followed.

Source document note

The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:

  • strand name - printed p.2 and the table of contents head B4 strand 1 "WORD PROCESSING", which is a copy-paste error. Corrected to "INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING" on four pieces of evidence: the scope-and-sequence names strand 1 "Introduction to computing"; B5 and B6 both print "STRAND 1: INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING" over the same sub-strands; B4 own p.9 heads strand 3 "WORD PROCESSING"; and B4 strand 1 sub-strands are Generation of Computers, MS-Windows Interface, Data Sources and Usage, and Technology in the Community, none of which is word processing

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Guide learners to perform basic calculations on sample data they have been made to collect using sum, average, percentages etc.
NB: This is to help the learner with fundamental principles of problem-
solving in computing and Computer science.
